Dreldragon's Final Fantasy XI Experience

Part of the city of Bastok, from the game Final Fantasy XI

Howdy,
I'm your host, Dreldragon (or at least that's the handle I use while playing Final Fantasy Online...), and I'm an old-school gamer (rapidly approaching his mid-30's) who has recently started playing Final Fantasy XI against his better judgement...

Due to the fact that, in addition to holding down a full-time job I am also studying part-time, I don't have a lot of time to enjoy this beautifully crafted game. Despite this, I thought I'd use a little of the time I don't have to share my impressions of the the Final Fantasy online "experience". I will try to keep this site updated with my progress playing the game, but don't hold your breath between updates... :)

I'm not providing a contact email address as I don't want to be inundated with spam, but if you see me (or more specifically, my character Yogibare) playing on the FF servers, feel free to say hello and I'll try to stop for a quick chat...

Quick Review

Here's a quick rundown of what I like and dislike about the game...

Things I love about FF XI...
  • Beautiful graphics (see picture above for example)
  • Huge gameworld
Things I like about FF XI...
  • No discernable lag when playing using 56k modem
  • Large number of quests and missions available
Things I dislike about FF XI...
  • Navigating through the large selection of in-game menus
  • Quest "journal" doesn't update when you receive new information about quests
Things I hate about FF XI...
  • The amount of screens you have to wade through when logging into or out of the game
  • The 6 hours it took me to download all the updates for the game before I could play...

Despite my gripes, Final Fantasy XI is a fantastic game that manages to retain the unique style that made previous games in the series so successful... I give it a provisional 8.5/10
